PUPPIES – of whatever breed – should not leave their mother before the age of 8 weeks.
Puppies, like this beautiful Goldendoodle, need sleep, food and warmth in the first 8 weeks of life. They need their mother for security and discipline and littermates for learning and socialization.
During this time they learn to function within a pack and begin to become aware of their environment. In the UK and some US states, it is actually for anyone to sell a puppy under 8 weeks old.
When you bring your puppy home, the biggest thing your puppy needs is SLEEP! They can sleep for over 20 hours a day. No matter how much you want to cuddle you gorgeous little bundle of fur and joy, it’s important for him or her to get enough shut-eye to develop properly.
An over-tired puppy will become irritable and may start nipping. You don’t want to encourage bad habits, so make sure your pup has their own personal space- not too hot, not too cold.
TIP: We recommend you have your pup checked out by a vet within a couple of days of arriving home – many good breeders insist on it. But don’t put your puppy on the clinic floor where they can pick up germs from other dogs.
DID YOU KNOW? If you are buying a puppy, “Vet checked” does NOT mean the pup or parents have passed any health test. It simply means that the puppy or adult dog appeared to be in good health at the time of the vet’s brief examination.
